Edisto Island History

Edisto Beach and State ParkEdisto Island is a South Carolina Barrier Island located in Colleton and Charleston Counties. In 1674, Edisto was purchased from the Edistow Indians by Lord Proprietor Anthony Ashley Cooper (https://charleston.locale.com). The English settlers that descended upon Edisto experimented with several crops including rice, indigo, and cotton. Cotton became king until the boll weevil severely damaged the cotton industry and the focus turned to farming, shrimping, and fishing. To this day, Edisto remains a small, quiet town that sees a surge in its population during the summer months. There are no hotels on Edisto and it is during the summer months that rental units are occupied by vacationers.

Parks and RecreationEdisto Beach State Park

With a local population of less than 1000, the parks and recreation of the area are by necessity different from the norm. Sports teams do not dominate the agenda. In fact, much of the focus on parks and recreation for Edisto Beach is on the development and maintenance of trails that allow residents and visitors to explore this barrier island from one end to the other. The Edisto Beach State Park is home to most of the trails and features trails that are ADA accessible so that almost anyone can enjoy this outdoor recreational pursuit (https://southcarolinaparks.com).
