Edisto Island History

Edisto Beach and State ParkEdisto Island is a South Carolina Barrier Island located in Colleton and Charleston Counties. In 1674, Edisto was purchased from the Edistow Indians by Lord Proprietor Anthony Ashley Cooper ( The English settlers that descended upon Edisto experimented with several crops including rice, indigo, and cotton. Cotton became king until the boll weevil severely damaged the cotton industry and the focus turned to farming, shrimping, and fishing. To this day, Edisto remains a small, quiet town that sees a surge in its population during the summer months. There are no hotels on Edisto and it is during the summer months that rental units are occupied by vacationers.
