History
The name "Ravenel" has long roots with origins in France before the 14th century. French emigres of this name from the noble family, Ravenel, came to America in the 1600s and established large plantations and had many illustrious descendants.
They lived in and around Charleston so it is probable that the town of Ravenel was derived from the family name and lands. Another significant part of the history of this area was the Stono slave Rebellion of 1739 which went badly for all concerned.
